What is the Baptism of the Lord?

Review why Baptism is important and a few of the signs and symbols used during baptism.

Sunday, January 10th we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord. This feast marks the end of the Christmas season and celebrates Christ’s conquering of sin through Baptism. Jesus did not need to be purified by the waters of Baptism; He purified the waters. The Baptism of the Lord is the origin of the Sacrament of Baptism. Through His baptism, Christ offered the disciples an example of how to baptize others. 

During Christ’s baptism, God the Father proclaims, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). Remind your child(ren) of the day the Lord claimed them as His son or daughter. Begin by finding a candle and lighting it as a way to remember that Jesus is the Light of the World. Show pictures from their baptism day, and recall the memories you have of their baptism. If you have their baptismal candles, bring them out and show them! Many baptismal candles have some familiar symbols on them. Help your children to recall the date of their baptism. Have them write it on a family calendar, the same way you would a birthday, and don’t forget to celebrate it when it comes!

Water: a symbol of cleansing, new life, and the covenant between God and His people.

Oil: a symbol of being marked as special and chosen by God. 

White garment: a symbol of purification and being clothed in Christ. 

Candle: a symbol of Christ’s light and the flame of faith.

Dove: a symbol of the Holy Spirit.
